Why do you need a saucepan for some desserts?

WHy is it that sometimes recipes for brownies or like gingerbread(not cookies) call for heating up some ingredients in a saucepan first? Can you just go without the saucepan? like this one for ex. http://www.recipezaar.com/227306
thanx guys i have a saucepan but i dont get why you need it for SOME brownies but not others?

A saucepan is usually needed for heating some spices to bring out the flavours and the oils. I wouldn’t go against the recipe in this case.

You also need a saucepan for custards and puddings. You surely have one in the house for Cooking your vegetables & soups & stews.
